Cedi stability due to govt’s discipline, not NPP policies – Khalid

Dr. Sharif Khalid is the Economic Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. He has rejected claims made by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Bawumia stated that the recent appreciation of the Cedi is due to policies from the previous NPP administration.

Bawumia claimed that the local currency's stability comes from a gold reserves initiative under Akufo-Addo's government. He argued that the current administration has not taken any effective measures to improve the economy.

During an event with the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London, Bawumia challenged the government's claims. He said, “If you ask the NDC what policy they have implemented for Cedi appreciation, they cannot tell you one.” He emphasized that they have not implemented anything substantial.

In response, Dr. Sharif Khalid spoke on Eyewitness News on May 21, 2025. He asserted that fiscal discipline and expenditure cuts are responsible for recent economic gains.

Khalid questioned Bawumia’s claims about the gold-for-oil program and its effects on inflation and currency performance. "The Cedi was not performing well even with this program," he noted.
