Former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, has rejected claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC stated that cement prices have dropped to GHS 82.
In a strong social media statement, Mr. Baafi said cement prices remain unchanged. He noted that the government has not talked to manufacturers about lowering prices.
“Despite NDC claims, prices remain unchanged,” he stated. He emphasized that Ghana's economy operates under a free market system. Prices are determined by market forces, not political tactics.
Baafi explained that the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi could help consumers. However, no coordinated effort has been made to lower prices. He accused the NDC of spreading misleading information about current market conditions.
“The NDC continues to spin stories that don’t align with the facts,” Baafi said. He urged producers to take advantage of the cedi’s strength for consumers' benefit. “It’s time for transparent leadership that prioritizes people — not empty propaganda.”
He concluded by calling for accountability from stakeholders regarding economic conditions. “Ghana deserves truth, stability, and affordable prices,” Baafi added. “Let’s demand accountability.”
The debate over cement pricing is heating up as the 2024 general elections approach.
