The Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast celebrated Chinese Language Day. This event took place in selected basic schools in the Central Region. It highlighted the importance of the Chinese language and cultural exchange in Ghana.
The celebration included performances by Chinese language learners. There were traditional lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and renditions of Chinese songs. These activities showcased the growing interest in Chinese culture.
In 2010, the UN established this day to promote multilingualism. The goal is to celebrate cultural diversity and equal use of its six official languages.
This year's theme was "Chinese language, a gift across time and space." The event featured the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa. He emphasized that language bridges communication and fosters international cooperation.
Ambassador Tong noted that Chinese education has flourished in Ghana. He stated that Confucius Institutes have produced many outstanding students. China and Ghana share a long-standing friendship now elevated to a strategic partnership.
He encouraged continued collaboration in education and culture. Ambassador Tong described the Chinese language as a key for deeper understanding between nations.
Emmanuel Essuman, Central Regional Director of Education, praised the Confucius Institute's work. He highlighted their effective collaboration with local education authorities on multilingualism.
Mr. Essuman urged educators to be adaptable in today's interconnected world. He stressed that navigating multiple languages is essential for success.
He encouraged students to embrace multilingualism for new experiences and opportunities. Learning languages can enrich personal and professional lives significantly.
Prof. Ou Yamei, Director of CIUCC, discussed this year’s theme further. She explained it reflects their mission to foster China-Ghana friendship through education.
CIUCC has established over 14 Confucius Classrooms across the Central Region. They train more than 11,000 students annually through various programs at different educational levels.
Prof. Ou emphasized that quality education is vital for youth development. It opens doors to high-paying careers, scholarships, summer camps, and further study opportunities.
