Chad announces suspension of visas to US citizens in response to Trump travel ban

Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Deby announced a visa suspension for U.S. citizens. This decision responds to the Trump administration's new travel ban on Chad.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reinstated a policy from his first term. He banned 12 countries, including Chad, due to "deficient" screening processes. These countries also historically refuse to take back overstaying citizens.

The new ban affects Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, and others. It includes heightened restrictions for seven additional countries. The travel policy takes effect Monday at 12:01 a.m.

In a Facebook post, Deby stated that the visa suspension is based on reciprocity principles. He emphasized that Chad values its dignity and pride over financial offers. This was in reference to a $400 million luxury plane gift from Qatar.

The Republic of Congo criticized the ban as a mistake. Government spokesperson Thierry Moungalla believes it stems from misunderstandings about an armed attack in the U.S. He insisted that Congo is not a terrorist country.

In Sierra Leone, Information Minister Chernor Bah expressed commitment to addressing concerns behind the ban. He stated they will work with U.S. authorities for progress.
