The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted bail to Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), known as Chairman Wontumi. The bail amount is GHS50 million, with two sureties required.
Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed this news on Wednesday, May 28. His client had been interrogated at EOCO headquarters since Tuesday, May 27. The questioning relates to Wontumi’s financial dealings with EXIM Bank.
His arrest led to backlash from NPP members on May 27. Many party supporters gathered outside EOCO demanding his release. Key figures included National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover.
On May 28, former MP Kennedy Agyapong offered to be one of Wontumi's sureties. Kwesi Opoku, NPP’s Tema West Chairman, confirmed Agyapong's support to Citi News. He stated that Agyapong was informed about the bail conditions and agreed to help.
Appiah-Kubi expressed confidence that they would meet the bail conditions soon. However, as of now, those conditions have not yet been fulfilled.
