Chairman Wontumi granted bail after CID interrogation

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, has been released by the CID.

He left the police station with his lawyers.

Chairman Wontumi told reporters he provided documents during questioning.

These documents showed he was not involved in illegal mining activities.

He also proved he was not mining in any forest reserve.

Mr. Boasiako received bail with two sureties.

Earlier today, Wontumi turned himself in to the police. This followed a failed search attempt at his home last week.

On May 23, armed national security operatives tried to enter his residence. They had a court-approved search warrant.

According to JoyNews, an arrest was imminent when Wontumi raised an alarm. This drew a crowd of supporters to the scene.

The standoff led to negotiations between operatives and Wontumi’s legal team. Eventually, the operatives withdrew, and his lawyers agreed to present him on Monday.

JoyNews reports that the state is investigating Boasiako for alleged illegal mining through Akonta Mining.

Earlier this month, Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah announced Akonta Mining's lease termination. However, Wontumi is challenging this cancellation in court.
