Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). On Monday, May 26, 2025, he went to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra. He responded to a police invitation and was accompanied by former Attorney General Godfred Dame.
This follows an attempted arrest at Wontumi's home in Kumasi on May 23. A team from National Security and police tried to apprehend him. Supporters quickly gathered at his residence to protest against the heavy security presence.
The reason for the attempted arrest remains unclear. However, sources suggest it may relate to ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct. Wontumi’s legal team stated he is ready to cooperate with law enforcement.
His lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, assured the media that Wontumi is not evading justice. He expressed that his client is willing to comply with all requirements.
Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the state's actions. He claimed the operation was lawful and followed national security protocols. Terlabi dismissed claims of political targeting, stating there was a valid reason for visiting Wontumi's house.
Wontumi's appearance with Godfred Dame has attracted public attention. It highlights both political significance and legal seriousness surrounding this case. The CID plans to continue its investigations in the coming days.
