Chairman Wontumi Charged with Illegal Mining Offenses, Granted Bail
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has been charged with illegal mining offenses.
He spoke to the press after being granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Boasiako stated, "The charge they have put on me is that I am engaged in galamsey."
He claims he has a valid mining license and denies mining in forest reserves.
Boasiako asked the police to provide evidence of illegal mining activities.
In Ghana, those guilty of illegal mining can face 15 to 25 years in prison.
On May 23, 2025, national security operatives attempted to search Boasiako's home in Kumasi. They were unable to enter the residence.
Godfred Dame leads Boasiako's legal team. He is a former Attorney General.
Dame accompanied Boasiako during his police visit along with Andy Appiah-Kubi, a former MP for Asante-Akim North.
