Chairman Wontumi struggles to meet GH₵50m bail by EOCO

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is still in custody. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His legal team is working to meet bail conditions set at GH₵50 million.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27. This followed a summons from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. He is under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for financial impropriety linked to transactions with the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIMBANK).

So far, his lawyers have secured one surety. They are actively seeking a second surety to fulfill bail requirements. Earlier reports suggested that former MP Kennedy Agyapong might be a surety. However, sources told Citi News that he is not involved in this arrangement.

The case has attracted national attention as EOCO investigates alleged questionable financial dealings. Details of the investigation remain largely undisclosed. It likely involves transactions affecting public funds and governance standards.

Wontumi's detention has sparked political debate. Supporters demand greater transparency in the legal process. Critics are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation.
