The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, will appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today. This follows a failed arrest attempt by National Security operatives and police at his home last Friday.
The attempted arrest led to protests from NPP supporters. They gathered outside Chairman Wontumi’s residence, condemning the heavily armed security personnel present. The reasons for the security operation are still unclear. However, Chairman Wontumi assured officers he would cooperate and attend the CID today.
His lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, confirmed their willingness to work with the police. He stated that Wontumi is not someone who hides or runs away. He has investments in Ghana and will be available whenever needed. Appiah emphasized that they have done nothing criminal and are not afraid to meet with authorities.
Meanwhile, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi defended the attempted arrest. He claimed it was justified and followed national security protocols. Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, he dismissed claims of political motivation behind the operation.
Terlabi stated that National Security had valid reasons for visiting Wontumi's home. He urged people to allow security personnel to do their jobs for peace in the country. Addressing Wontumi's claims of harassment, Terlabi described them as distractions.
He insisted that no one intended harm towards Wontumi during the operation. The purpose was simply to invite him for questioning. Terlabi concluded by saying you cannot approach a wild dog unarmed when trying to catch it.
