Chairman Wontumi to report to CID again today

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, is known as Chairman Wontumi. He will report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) again on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Wontumi visited the CID Headquarters in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025. He was accompanied by a legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Dame.

According to Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah from the CID's Public Affairs Unit, Wontumi faces three allegations:
1. Mining without a license
2. Polluting water bodies
3. Entering a forest reserve without permission

The statement noted that Wontumi cooperated with investigators and provided his statement. He was granted bail and must return to the CID at 3:00 p.m. on May 27, 2025.

The police assured the public that updates about the case would be shared later. After his interrogation, Wontumi spoke to journalists and denied any involvement in illegal mining activities known as galamsey.

He claimed he presented his mining license to prove he operates legally. “I was invited by the police regarding galamsey,” he said. “I showed them my license to prove I am not involved in illegal mining.”

Wontumi also addressed claims about working in a forest area. He stated he had applied for a license but was informed it was protected land.

“If anyone is working there now, I am not aware of it,” he added.
