A section of the Accra-Cape Coast highway near Mallam Market is crowded with traders. This situation causes major inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians.
During a visit, The Ghanaian Times noted busy trading inside and outside the market. Many shops were locked, and some stalls were empty. This suggests that some traders have left their spaces for the pavement.
Most traders sell foodstuffs and other goods. They have extended their activities beyond the market area. Goods are displayed on pavements, road shoulders, and even one lane of the three-lane road.
Vehicles are parked along the side of the market road. A container was seen in the middle of the road at Mallam Market. The footbridge at the market remains unused.
Heavy traffic builds up on Mallam Market Road during peak hours. Vehicles and pedestrians compete for space, especially on market days. Irregular parking by trucks delivering goods worsens congestion, narrowing the road further.
