Charles Bissue fights back as Special Prosecutor files galamsey charges

Former Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Charles Bissue, has responded to legal action from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He called the charges against him baseless and plans to contest them in court.

The OSP has filed a writ to prosecute Bissue and Andy Thomas Owusu. They face allegations of misusing public office for profit and corruption. These charges relate to the 2019 “Galamsey Fraud” investigation by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye P.I. team.

In a press statement on Tuesday, Bissue denied any wrongdoing. He insisted he always upheld the law during his public service tenure. “I have always acted in full compliance with legal and ethical obligations,” he stated.

Bissue welcomed the OSP's decision after five years but demanded transparency. He urged the Special Prosecutor to present the full version of the Tiger Eye documentary in court. “Ghanaians deserve access to unvarnished truth and factual evidence,” he said.

He emphasized that this case is significant under a new administration, highlighting judicial impartiality's importance. While hoping for a fair trial, Bissue asked the public not to rush to conclusions.

“I remain committed to cooperating with proceedings,” he concluded. He trusts that courts will handle this matter impartially and conclusively.

The “Galamsey Fraud” exposé continues to spark national debate about corruption in illegal mining efforts. It has drawn criticism from political figures and civil society groups alike.
