Chief Justice faces 10-day ultimatum over removal petitions

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has ten days to respond to three petitions. These petitions seek her removal from office, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

The petitions have sparked widespread debate about her conduct. They question her suitability to remain in her position.

Details of the allegations are not publicly disclosed. The Chief Justice now faces a critical deadline that could impact the legal process. Her response may determine if the matter advances to a formal inquiry.

This situation arose after Chief Justice Torkonoo wrote to President Mahama and the Council of State. In her letter dated March 27, she requested copies of the petitions against her.

She expressed concern about being denied access to these documents. The Presidency confirmed that the petitions exist but did not provide them.

Torkonoo argues that constitutional justice requires she be informed of the allegations. She believes she should have an opportunity to respond.

“It is fundamental that no decision affecting a defendant's rights occurs without notice,” she stated. Her demand raises concerns about transparency in this process.

Now, the President and the Council of State face a crucial decision.
