Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah, a governance analyst, has raised concerns. He is worried about the political implications of petitions against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
He warned that a lack of transparency could lead to perceptions of political motivation. This might undermine public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
His comments come after petitions were submitted to President John Mahama. These petitions call for the removal of the Chief Justice.
In an interview with Citi FM on March 28, Professor Agyemang-Duah expressed his concerns. He said the situation could escalate into a political controversy if due process is ignored.
He pointed out a troubling pattern where new governments target key figures in independent institutions.
Some members of the NDC have expressed dissatisfaction with the Chief Justice's actions during the campaign. This could be seen as a political witch hunt, he noted.
He drew parallels to former President Akufo-Addo's actions against the previous Electoral Commission chairperson. If this becomes common practice, it sets a dangerous precedent for future governments.
Professor Agyemang-Duah emphasized that such trends could erode institutional stability and public confidence. He cautioned that removing individuals from independent bodies creates instability and mistrust.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has responded to Chief Justice Torkonoo’s request for copies of the petitions. He has given her 10 days to review and respond to the allegations. This marks the next step in her potential removal process under constitutional guidelines.
