Children need human interaction, Not just devices — Carbonu

Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has raised concerns about technology use in early childhood education. He warns that it may hinder children's social and cognitive development.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on May 13, he stressed the importance of a balanced approach. While early exposure to technology is necessary, it should not be the main teaching tool. “Introducing children to ICT should happen early,” he said, “but relying on it as instruction should only come at the degree stage.”

Carbonu believes children need real-world interactions to develop social skills and emotional intelligence. He emphasized that screens should not replace human connections in learning. “These children are not supposed to rely on it as a way of getting the job exhibited,” he added.

His comments come as many schools in Ghana shift towards digital learning platforms, even at kindergarten levels. Advocates argue that tech literacy is vital for preparing children for a digital future. However, experts like Carbonu warn against replacing traditional methods with technology.

He explained that children should first build social connections through play and engagement. Only later should digital tools be introduced as support mechanisms. “When people grow and can understand concepts, then maybe the blend will have to come in,” he noted.

In this rapidly digitizing educational landscape, Carbonu urges policymakers and educators to find balance. “It’s not about rejecting technology,” he clarified, “but ensuring it is introduced at the right time and in the right way.”
