Chinese national murder suspect granted bail by Takoradi District Court

A Takoradi District Court has granted bail to a Chinese national, Zhang Jianping, who is implicated in the murder of his compatriot, Shen Shihong. The court's decision came after a compelling argument from the defense lawyer, who highlighted the absence of clear evidence linking Zhang to the crime. The prosecution had initially opposed the bail request, citing concerns over potential flight risks and the severity of the charges. However, Judge Michael Cudjoe emphasized that bail should not be used as a punitive measure and that it is a right for defendants unless proven otherwise.

As part of his bail conditions, Zhang must deposit an amount of GH¢200,000 and provide two sureties. The court also ordered him to surrender his passport and report regularly to law enforcement. This case has drawn significant attention due to its international implications and ongoing investigations into alleged illegal activities involving foreign nationals in Ghana's mining sector. The next hearing is scheduled for November 1, 2023, as authorities continue to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Shen’s death.
