Chip-embedded passport boasts over 150 security upgrades – Ablakwa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced passport reforms. These changes take effect today, Monday, April 28.

The reforms include several key updates. There will be a shift from biometric to chip-embedded passports. A 24-hour passport processing service will also be introduced. Additionally, passports will be delivered directly to applicants' homes. An electronic tracking system will help applicants monitor their applications.

Passport application fees will decrease by 30%. The time to acquire a passport will not exceed 15 working days. For expedited service, it will take five working days after the application process is complete.

All new passports will connect with the National Identification Authority's database. This integration aims to streamline applicant verification. The new chip-embedded passports have 175 security features. In contrast, the old ones had only 32 features.

The Minister stated that these changes enhance passport security and transparency. They also aim to eliminate intermediaries in the process. The upgraded passports were first launched on December 2, 2024.

These new passports meet international standards and reflect Ghana’s cultural identity through Adinkra symbols. At the launch event in Accra, Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa called this initiative a milestone for digitizing public services.

Each e-passport contains a microchip that securely stores biometric data and photos. It includes advanced anti-fraud elements with visible and hidden security markers for safer travel.

This is the first time industry players collaborated for enhanced security measures at all levels of inspection. The incorporation of nanotechnology adds an extra layer of protection to the bio page.

Overall, these upgrades increase security features from 32 to over 150 in the new chip-embedded passport. The Micro Frequency Identification Chip encodes and stores essential data about the bearer as well.

This holistic package meets international travel document standards approved by ICAO, ensuring top-notch document security.
