Christopher Boadi Mensah has been sworn in as Chairman of the Board of the National Insurance Commission (NIC). He is also the Chief Executive Officer of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA).
Mr. Boadi Mensah has over 20 years of experience in finance and insurance. He is a Chartered Insurer and a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute in both the UK and Ghana.
He holds an MBA from the Netherlands Business School. He also earned a Master of Science Degree in Economic Policy Management from GIMPA.
Mr. Boadi Mensah is respected for his knowledge of insurance operations and leadership. He previously served as Managing Director at Serene Insurance Company Limited.
His appointment aims to strengthen governance at NIC and promote reforms in the insurance industry. The swearing-in ceremony occurred on May 19, 2025, at the Ministry of Finance in Accra, Ghana.
Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem spoke on behalf of the Finance Minister. He called Mr. Boadi Mensah's appointment timely and critical for NIC.
The Deputy Minister urged NIC to innovate and expand insurance access to underserved groups, especially informal workers and climate-vulnerable communities.
He noted that insurance penetration in Ghana is below two percent, which is insufficient for economic growth. The Board must lead reforms to protect livelihoods and mobilize long-term capital.
The government supports enforcing compulsory insurance for motor vehicle liabilities, fire safety, public liability for commercial buildings, and professional liability across professions.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Boadi Mensah emphasized upholding public trust within NIC. He highlighted collaboration with insurers, policymakers, and consumers as essential for driving reforms.
He pledged to ensure sound governance while promoting innovation in Ghana’s insurance sector. “The Commission stands at a crossroads,” he stated, committing to provide strategic direction for a resilient industry.
Other newly inaugurated Board members include Dr. Abiba Zakariah (Commissioner of Insurance) and former Managing Director Mathew Kweku Atta Aidoo among others.
The new Board begins its work amid renewed focus on regulatory reform and market improvement. With strong leadership, they aim to reshape Ghana’s insurance sector for everyone's benefit.
