Cleanliness will determine whether you stay in office or are sacked – Mahama tells MMDCEs

President John Mahama has announced a new cleanliness benchmark for MMDCEs.

Sanitation levels in their areas will now affect their job security.

During his Thank You Tour in Dodowa on May 16, he emphasized this change.

“Cleanliness will be a key performance indicator for MMDCEs,” he stated.

This means it will determine if they stay or are removed from office.

The announcement comes as the country faces ongoing flooding issues, especially in Accra.

President Mahama linked these problems to poor drainage and unregulated development.

He also mentioned the worsening effects of climate change.

He called the situation unacceptable and stressed urgent action is needed.

A dedicated inter-agency task force is already working on flood mitigation strategies.

Their efforts include desilting major drains and reengineering waterways.

They are also relocating structures in waterways and enforcing building regulations.

Special focus is on the Odaw Basin and Kaneshie-Mallam corridor.

The President expressed concern about delays in flood prevention projects funded by the World Bank's GARID programme.

He urged residents to be cautious during the rainy season, especially near open drains.

To help districts manage sanitation better, 80% of revenues from the District Assemblies Common Fund will go directly to MMDAs.

This will provide more resources for development projects and sanitation programs.

Cabinet will soon discuss fully decentralizing the sanitation budget for each district's cleanliness responsibility.

"Accra deserves a clean and resilient environment," President Mahama said.

He added that they are integrating the Greater Accra Flood Master Control Plan into their national climate resilience strategy.
