The Bishop of the Wa Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Francis Bomansaan, shared a message about Lent and Ramadan. He noted that their timing allows Muslims and Christians to purify themselves together. This includes prayer and charity aimed at worshiping God with clean hearts.
Muslims began fasting for Ramadan on March 1, 2025, and ended on March 30, 2025. Meanwhile, Catholics started Lent on March 5, 2025.
Most Reverend Bomansaan's message was directed to the Upper West Regional Minister and local Muslim leaders. He mentioned that Pope Francis declared 2025 a Jubilee Year themed "pilgrimage of hope." The theme emphasizes finding hope in God's words.
Pope Francis encourages Christians to be sources of hope for those suffering from wars, famine, and drought. The Bishop echoed this sentiment during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. He believes Muslims and Christians can witness hope in a world filled with injustice and conflict.
He acknowledged that genuine dialogue is often hindered by building walls in our hearts. The Bishop recalled positive interactions with Islamic leaders who support Christian-Muslim dialogue in the region. They aim to promote peace and development together.
He urged everyone to consider how to bring hope to those struggling. This includes poor widows, single mothers, vulnerable young girls, and school dropouts due to financial issues. Vocational training can provide significant hope for disadvantaged youth.
Most Reverend Bomansaan appealed for support from Muslim and Christian charities for widows and single mothers. He suggested creating centers for vocational skills training for boys and girls unable to afford formal education.
He encouraged communities to unite in establishing these training centers. "In this Jubilee Year, let’s give hope to our poor women and girls," he said.
The Bishop praised the Upper West Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Mahama Osman Kanihi, for starting an educational fund. This fund aims to provide quality education for needy students regardless of their faith.
He concluded with a Vatican message for Ramadan. He expressed his hope that this feast fosters encounters between Muslims and Christians. Such moments of sharing can transform communities into seeds of hope.
May our friendship serve as a refreshing breeze in a world longing for peace and fraternity.
