Coastal erosion: ‘the situation is getting more terrible’ - NADMO

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reports worsening tidal wave damage.

The sea is eroding communities like Salakope, Agavedzi, and Amutinu. This situation is deepening the struggles of local residents.

Pascal Agbagba, the Volta Regional NADMO Coordinator, warned of stronger waves ahead. He mentioned that rain could intensify the waves.

“The situation is getting more terrible,” he said during a donation event. The Kingdom of God Foundation provided relief items to victims.

Agbagba expressed hope for government projects to reduce wave damage soon.

He noted that the sea now crosses roads, bringing in more sand daily. Cars must scoop sand before passing through affected areas.

Between January and March 2025, over 100 rooms were washed away. This left more than 600 residents displaced in Ketu South Municipality.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu shared his experience with victims. He spent a night with them and understands their challenges.

Gunu reaffirmed the government's commitment to combat coastal erosion. He promised appropriate compensation for affected residents.

“As a government, we are determined to find a permanent solution,” he stated. The government has initiated a sea defense project for lasting protection against tidal waves.

John Paul Semavor, Director of the Kingdom of God Foundation, discussed their donation efforts. They provided 50 bags of rice and 30 mattresses for immediate relief.

Semavor hopes these items will help ease victims' suffering temporarily. He was abroad when he learned about the devastation and planned his return donations promptly.

He encouraged victims to remain hopeful as the government works on solutions to protect their lives and property from future tidal waves.
