Cocoa sector deserves robust protective legislation - Dr Abbey

Dr. Randy Abbey, the CEO of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has made a call to action. He urged the Attorney General and Parliament to create stronger laws. These laws should protect cocoa trees from illegal miners and chainsaw operators.

During International Labour Day celebrations in Nkawie, Ashanti Region, he spoke about this issue. Dr. Abbey noted the severe loss of cocoa trees due to illegal activities. This poses a serious threat to Ghana's important cocoa sector.

He stated that the current laws are not strong enough. They lack sufficient penalties for those who break them. This weakness encourages illegal operators to continue their destructive actions.

Dr. Abbey emphasized that cocoa has supported Ghana’s economy for over a century. He believes this valuable resource deserves better legal protection.
