The CEO of Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, Mr. Ralph Ayitey, urges all hospitality institutions in Ghana to use only local poultry.
He spoke at the launch of the Ghana Poultry Day Festival, 2025. This festival celebrates the Ghanaian poultry industry and is organized by Agrihouse Foundation.
Mr. Ayitey stressed the importance of supporting local farmers and products. He said, "Serving our clients with locally produced items has helped us succeed."
He mentioned that they serve local fruit juices and fresh fish from Elmina. He encouraged other hospitality businesses to support local poultry farmers.
Ayitey pointed out the economic impact of importing poultry. "Ghana consumes over 600,000 imported chickens daily," he noted. He highlighted that there are 592,000 unemployed people in Ghana.
"This isn't just about chicken; it's about jobs," he added. He called for a self-sufficient Ghana that employs its citizens and pays taxes.
The theme for this year's Poultry Day Festival is significant: "Investing in the Local Poultry Sector." Ayitey believes it can transform the nation.
He revealed that Ghana imports over 300,000 metric tonnes of chicken each year. Only 5% of consumed chicken is produced locally.
Ayitey also discussed ostrich farming as a potential economic boost. "Ostrich farming could make us net exporters of meat and leather," he said.
To achieve these goals, he called for deliberate actions in poultry farming. This includes innovating feed sources and involving youth in agriculture education.
"We need specialized curricula and training programs in poultry science," he stated.
Ayitey emphasized promoting Ghana's poultry industry brand: "Ghana Chicken is Fresh. Healthy. Safe."
Regarding government support, he requested partnerships rather than handouts. He asked for tax incentives and better infrastructure for local producers.
"We want support across the entire value chain," Ayitey explained. When Ghana's poultry sector thrives, everyone benefits—food security, jobs, health, agritourism, and economic growth.
In conclusion, Mr. Ayitey urged Ghanaians to support local poultry products actively. "Let's make Ghana chicken the preferred choice," he said.
He believes changing perceptions about poultry work will inspire future generations to create jobs instead of just seeking them.
