Commercial Transport Operators announce 30% increase in fares to start Feb 18

Private Transport Operators to Increase Fares by 30% on February 18

Transport fares will rise by 30% starting Friday, February 18, 2022. This increase is due to recent fuel price hikes in Ghana. Private commercial transport operators have decided to implement this change despite pushback from the Transport Ministry.

The group stated that a gallon of fuel has increased from GHC27 to nearly GHC36. They believe this fare adjustment is necessary to keep their businesses afloat amid rising costs.

On February 7, the Coalition of Private Transport Operators proposed a 30% fare increase to the Transport Ministry. The government suggested only a 10% increase, which the Coalition rejected. They argued that a smaller increase would threaten their operations.

Meetings between both parties concluded without resolution. The government plans to meet with the Coalition again on Friday.

Charles Danso, Chairman of the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, noted that fuel prices have risen by about 30 pesewas per litre recently. Some major filling stations now sell fuel for ยข7.990 per litre.

In light of these changes, private transport operators have instructed members to implement the fare increase immediately on February 18. They ask customers for understanding as they work to sustain their services and businesses.
