A five-member committee will begin hearings today, Thursday, May 15. This committee was established by President John Mahama to investigate three petitions against the Chief Justice.
The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang. It was formed under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. The decision followed a finding of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice. The establishment of the committee involved consultation with the Council of State.
The committee plans to meet three times a week. After completing its work, it will present findings and recommendations to the President.
Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo is under investigation due to five separate misconduct petitions. In response, President Mahama suspended Justice Torkornoo after consulting with the Council of State. He then set up this five-member panel for a detailed inquiry into the allegations.
