A five-member committee will begin hearings today. This committee investigates petitions against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. President John Dramani Mahama established it under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. The President consulted with the Council of State before forming the committee.
The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang. This follows a prima facie case against the Chief Justice.
Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, MP for Effia, questions the timing of the suspension. He noted that the Chief Justice was suspended nearly three weeks ago. He expressed concern about the lack of a timeline for the committee's work.
On Eyewitness News, he said, "The president suspended her on April 22." He asked why it took so long to start hearings. "Why suspend her if it would take three weeks to sit?" he questioned.
He also criticized the absence of a deadline for the committee's report. "Which committee operates without a timeline?" he stated.
