Committee to begin hearings into petitions against CJ

A five-member committee will investigate petitions against the Chief Justice.

President John Dramani Mahama set up the committee. Public hearings will start on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

This follows the President's acceptance of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice. This decision was made under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and with advice from the Council of State.

Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court chairs the committee.

The Presidency Communications Directorate issued a statement about this development. Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu signed it. The committee will meet three times a week and report to the President after its work is done.

The Chief Justice was suspended due to serious allegations of misconduct. These include administrative abuse and conflict of interest from three separate petitions by legal professionals and civil society advocates.

While details are not officially disclosed, claims involve interference in judicial processes and unethical handling of cases.

The President suspended the Chief Justice based on these allegations. He believed they warranted an independent investigation. The suspension aims to ensure an unbiased inquiry.

These proceedings are likely to attract national attention due to their significance for Ghana’s judicial system.

The outcome could have lasting effects on the judiciary. If findings support the allegations, the President may act on recommendations, possibly leading to removal from office.

Until then, the Chief Justice remains suspended during this inquiry process.

Committee sessions will be closed to the public, but transparency advocates want some hearings made public.
