The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has released its final report on Ghana’s 2024 general elections, describing them as transparent, credible, and peaceful while urging improvements in transparency and accountability.
Led by former Botswana President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi, the 16-member team observed the election that saw John Dramani Mahama elected as Ghana’s 14th president. Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC praised Ghana’s democratic progress, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity and accountability.
The report commended polling officials, security agencies, and Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his early concession, which eased tensions. The Electoral Commission was lauded for reducing voting delays but urged to address result announcement delays.
COG also warned against rising political monetisation, recommending stricter campaign finance regulations. The report has been shared with key stakeholders for review.
