Minister Sam Nartey George has criticized the excessive issuance of radio frequency authorizations in Ghana. He warned that too many frequencies threaten the country's media landscape.
On Channel One TV, he mentioned that over 600 frequencies have been granted. He called this number excessive and harmful to broadcast development.
Mr. George noted that the chaotic distribution of frequencies has created an ineffective broadcasting environment. He believes Ghana should ideally have fewer than 100 active radio stations.
He acknowledged that attempts to reduce these numbers might face political pushback. Such efforts could be misinterpreted as attacks on press freedom.
The Minister pointed out that many current radio stations do not meet professional standards. Some merely repeat political talk and syndicated news without offering original content.
He proposed enforcing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for broadcasters. Frequency holders must show a commitment to quality production and public service.
Currently, 57 radio stations risk having their frequencies suspended for rule violations. This action is not punitive but aims to help them regularize their operations.
On March 24, Mr. George informed journalists about six recently suspended stations. Three of those have already met conditions for reinstatement.
He emphasized the importance of press freedom alongside regulatory compliance. "Media houses cannot ignore regulations while claiming press freedom," he stated.
