Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced new plans from President John Dramani Mahama. By the end of the year, a compulsory foreign language course will be introduced for second-year Senior High School (SHS) students. This policy aims to enhance students' global competitiveness.
Students will have options to choose from several international languages. These include French, Spanish, German, and Chinese. The choice will depend on their academic interests.
Iddrisu made this announcement on April 24 during the launch of the Free Sanitary Pads Programme initiative. He stated that every Ghanaian student in SHS two will select one major foreign language. This change will also be part of a curriculum review.
The Minister highlighted that this initiative is part of broader educational reforms under President Mahama’s leadership. He also mentioned integrating STEM education into the basic school curriculum. This integration will start with learners in Primary Four through Six.
“By the end of this year, President Mahama is promoting Mathematics, Science, and Engineering education (STEM),” Iddrisu said. STEM kits and cells will be introduced for all learners at these levels. The Ghana Education Trust Fund is working to secure these resources for Upper Primary Four and Six.
These interventions aim to improve the quality and relevance of education in Ghana.
