Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, MP for Gushegu, has made a request. He wants the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to use virtual means to interrogate former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently outside the country.
On Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on June 5, 2025, Mr. Tampuli discussed this idea. He believes it is practical and fair due to the former minister's medical situation and ongoing legal issues.
He stated, "It is in the interest of the OSP to take advantage of these platforms." This would show that they have made efforts to reach Mr. Ofori-Atta. He urged them to "take advantage of the electronic opportunity to engage him."
This opinion comes after the OSP reinstated Mr. Ofori-Atta as a wanted person on June 2, 2025. He failed to appear for a scheduled interrogation.
Previously, in February 2025, the OSP had removed his name from the wanted list. This was based on assurances from his legal team that he would return by June 2025 for investigations into alleged corruption during his time as Finance Minister.
Mr. Ofori-Atta's legal team has requested a virtual interview for their client. Earlier this year, he expressed his dismay over the OSP’s actions in an open letter.
Legal experts are discussing this situation as well. Some suggest that the OSP can file charges against Mr. Ofori-Atta while he is absent. Private lawyer Martin Kpebu noted that courts can make exceptions for justice.
The decision to declare Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive has sparked debate among politicians and analysts. Dr. Stephen Amoah, MP for Nhyiaeso, called this declaration “highly problematic.” He questioned whether the OSP has the legal authority for such a pronouncement.
