Constable Forson’s right palm dazed me, leaving me short of breath – Afenyo Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has spoken out. This follows a video of him hitting a police officer during the Save the Judiciary demonstration. The protest involved the NPP and other political parties.

In the viral video, Afenyo-Markin and other protestors tried to break through a police barricade. He punched a police officer and called him a fool for blocking their way. Tensions rose when he was almost denied entry to Parliament to present a petition.

On May 5, 2025, Afenyo-Markin issued a statement about the incident. He claimed Constable Forson struck him hard on the chest as he approached the barricade. He said this left him dazed and short of breath.

Afenyo-Markin described the assault as particularly serious. He noted that Forson was being reprimanded by his superiors at that moment. Despite this, Forson reportedly said he didn’t care who Afenyo-Markin was.

He emphasized that they should not lose focus on their demonstration's purpose. They marched to defend the Constitution and judicial independence, which must be protected.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has contacted Speaker Alban Bagbin. They requested permission to release Afenyo-Markin for an investigation into the incident. This follows an ongoing inquiry related to the viral video showing him punching an officer.

The Police stated they have reviewed several videos and want Afenyo-Markin’s cooperation in their investigation. The officer involved will also assist with this process.
