Convert the National Cathedral into a beautiful apartment for workers – MP advises Mahama

Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, the MP for Guan, has a suggestion. He advised President John Dramani Mahama to turn the National Cathedral into apartments for workers.

Agbenyo believes the $58 million spent on the cathedral is wasted. The National Cathedral was proposed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo. It was meant to be a national Christian worship center and a symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage.

The project started in 2017 but faced many controversies. Issues included its high cost, funding sources, and allegations of embezzlement by trustees.

On Channel One TV, Agbenyo expressed his concerns. He said, “$58 million has gone down the drain.” He questioned how to complete the project.

He suggested converting the site into beautiful apartments for workers. Staff from Ridge Hospital and ministry employees could live there.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia criticized former President Akufo-Addo's spending on the cathedral. He claimed this expenditure contributed to the NPP's defeat in 2024 elections.

During an NPP event in Takoradi on April 26, he stated that public anger grew over the unfinished project after spending $58 million.

Additionally, John Dramani Mahama's administration officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat. Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that no more government funds will support this abandoned project.

He emphasized that taxpayer money will not be used for it moving forward. There are unresolved issues regarding procurement processes and contractor payments.

Kwakye Ofosu noted that without a National Cathedral, it remains worthless. He assured that President Mahama will not invest GHS400 million of taxpayers’ money into it.
