Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, claims the cost of living in Ghana has eased. He made this statement while defending the Dumsor levy on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 7.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu responded to criticism of the GH¢1 per litre Energy Sector Levy. He argued that government interventions have reduced financial pressures on households. “The cost of living has come down since we assumed power,” he said.
This counters opposition claims about worsening economic hardship. Recently, Parliament approved the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This bill introduces a surcharge on petroleum products.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that the levy addresses energy sector debt. As of March 2025, this debt stands at US$3.1 billion. He noted that US$3.7 billion is needed to clear it fully and an additional US$1.2 billion for thermal fuel procurement.
The levy faces resistance from civil society groups and opposition parties. They argue it places an undue burden on Ghanaians. Despite this backlash, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu insists that government decisions serve the public's long-term interests and are yielding positive results in affordability and stability.
