Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader in parliament, criticized the Council of State. He believes they have failed Ghanaians.
Afenyo-Markin expressed doubt about trusting the Council of State. This followed their finding of a prima facie case against Chief Justice Torkonoo. He shared his thoughts on JOY FM's Super Morning Show.
He said, “Our Council of State has failed us.” He noted disappointment among political actors regarding this situation.
In the 8th parliament, Afenyo-Markin relied heavily on the Council of State. They provided significant support during that time. Now, he questions whether he can trust them again.
He mentioned that their recommendation to suspend the Chief Justice affects the institution itself. His comments came after President Mahama suspended her based on the Council's findings.
Afenyo-Markin also accused President John Dramani Mahama of plotting a third-term agenda. He pointed out Mahama’s unexpected nomination of seven judges to the Supreme Court as part of this plan.
At a New Patriotic Party (NPP) press conference, he called for a peaceful demonstration. He emphasized that this fight is for every citizen who values the rule of law.
He warned against repeating past divisions and anger in governance decisions. These choices could impact future governments significantly.
Sammy Gyamfi, Communications Officer for the ruling NDC, responded to Afenyo-Markin's claims. He stated that 30 out of 31 Council members support prima facie cases against Chief Justice Torkonoo.
Gyamfi argued that it’s unlikely all these members are NDC supporters who dislike her.
