Council of State must be abolished – Barker-Vormawor

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent human rights activist, has called for the abolition of Ghana’s Council of State, labeling it irrelevant to the country’s governance.

Speaking on JoyNews on Saturday, January 25, he argued that its absence would have no impact, saying, “If we move forward without it, nobody would even remember it exists.”

Barker-Vormawor also advocated for constitutional reforms to enhance accountability and fairness, including subjecting the President to taxation like ordinary citizens.

He further criticized indemnity provisions shielding Presidents from prosecution after leaving office, describing them as enablers of impunity that contradict principles of justice.

His proposals echo growing demands for governance reforms to strengthen transparency and equality within Ghana’s political and judicial systems.
