Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He claims the President has made the Council of State ineffective.
Afenyo-Markin spoke during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstration on May 5. The protest was against the suspension of the Chief Justice. He accused the President of sidelining important constitutional bodies.
After submitting a petition to Parliament, Afenyo-Markin addressed the crowd. He described the Council of State as “emasculated.” He said it has become toothless and lost its constitutional relevance.
According to him, this weakening threatens Ghana’s democratic stability. It also erodes essential checks and balances for good governance.
He urged Ghanaians to stay vigilant. They must defend democratic institutions that ensure accountability in government.
The NPP-led demonstration had support from civil society groups. Participants protested what they called politically motivated interference in the judiciary.
The petition demanded reinstatement of the Chief Justice. It also called for reaffirmation of constitutional norms by the executive branch.
