Couple arrested for breeding exotic cats in Spain

Spanish authorities have arrested a couple for selling exotic cats online. This includes protected species like white tigers, pumas, and clouded leopards.

The Civil Guard police raided their home in Majorca. They discovered the couple was breeding rare feline species to sell on social media.

Agents found 19 felines on the property. These included a caracal, two servals, and 16 hybrid felines.

The Civil Guard stated this was just "the tip of the iceberg." They believe it is part of a global criminal organization involving breeders, transporters, and vets.

Most animals for sale came from Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. They were smuggled into the European Union.

Authorities noted that the couple's social media activity was "extremely active." People from other countries contacted them to buy these animals.

The smuggling route went through Poland's border with Belarus. The animals were distributed using false documents.

Europe is a major hub for exotic wildlife trade. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) reports that the black market is growing.

The couple also advertised other exotic animals online. This included hyenas, desert lynxes, and more pumas.

White tigers are particularly rare. A clouded leopard was listed online for €60,000 (£52,000; $68,000).

This raid is part of a larger operation that began last March. One other person is under investigation for selling exotic animals online.

The rescued animals are temporarily at Son Servera Safari Zoo in Majorca. They will later be moved to a rescue center near Alicante.

High demand for exotic cats often comes from social media influence. Many see these felines as symbols of wealth or status.

However, these cats require significant space and care. The Spanish Civil Guard warns they can be aggressive and dangerous to people or other pets.

This often leads owners to abandon them when they cannot cope.
