Court Update
The Accra Circuit Court, led by Her Honour Susana Eduful, has made a ruling. The police must produce the key exhibit in a narcotics case. This case involves 25-year-old phone repairer Daniel Adamtey. He is awaiting sentencing for trying to smuggle cannabis into police cells.
Adamtey was first arraigned on October 8, 2024. He faced two counts: attempting to commit a crime and unlawful possession of narcotic drugs. Initially, he pleaded not guilty and received bail of GH¢30,000. He needed two sureties earning at least GH¢3,000 monthly.
Later, Adamtey changed his plea to guilty. However, sentencing was postponed during the latest court session. This delay occurred because the police investigator did not present the exhibit.
The court ordered that the exhibit be brought on April 29, 2025. Sentencing cannot proceed until this happens.
Chief Inspector Emmanuel Teye Okuffo reported Adamtey's arrest on October 1, 2024. He was caught at the Accra Regional Police SWAT Unit while delivering a deodorant container to remand prisoner Ernest Amanatey. Police found ten wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp inside the container.
During a personal search, more quantities were discovered in Adamtey's trousers pocket. The case faced delays when Adamtey missed court on November 6, 2024. A bench warrant was issued but later rescheduled for December 17.
In December, the court ordered forensic testing of the seized substances for an amended charge sheet. On February 20, 2025, forensic results confirmed active cannabis components: Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, Cannabinol, and Cannabidiol.
Despite these findings, the court stressed that producing the physical exhibit is crucial before sentencing can occur. The case remains ongoing.
