Court restrains Peter Amewu from holding himself out as former Hohoe MP

The Court of Appeal in Koforidua has issued an injunction. This restrains John Peter Amewu from claiming he is a former MP for Hohoe.

The injunction follows an application by Professor Margaret Kweku and others. They represent the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) areas.

The Court also stopped the Speaker of Parliament from processing Mr. Amewu's entitlements as a former MP. This will remain in effect until the appeal is heard.

This legal action comes after an election petition against Mr. Amewu’s election. On July 29, 2024, the Ho High Court dismissed this petition due to lack of jurisdiction.

A Notice of Appeal was filed on July 31, 2024, challenging that decision. The interlocutory injunction application was submitted to the Court of Appeal on December 23, 2024.

Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata represented the petitioners during the hearing. He urged the Court to stop any benefits for Mr. Amewu until the appeal concludes.

In response, Mr. Amewu's counsel argued that he did nothing wrong. They claimed any procedural errors should be addressed to the Electoral Commission.

The ruling was delivered by a three-member panel led by Justice Bright Mensah. The other members were Justice Noble Nkrumah and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

They found merit in the application and granted the injunction. The case will remain pending until the substantive appeal is heard.
