Crackdown in Samreboi: 26 arrested in major forest reserve galamsey bust

A police operation in the Western Region has led to 26 arrests. These individuals are suspected of illegal mining near Samreboi.

The raid was intelligence-driven. It is part of a nationwide effort to stop galamsey operations. This aims to protect Ghana’s environment from ongoing destruction.

Among those arrested were six Chinese nationals, two Koreans, and 18 Ghanaians. The operation involved various units of the Ghana Police Service. This included the Intelligence Directorate and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Police seized eight excavators during the raid. Five additional machines were left behind due to logistical issues. They also impounded several vehicles, including two Toyota Hilux pickups and four motorbikes.

Initial findings linked the site to Akonta Mining Company. This company is reportedly owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. His name has been mentioned in discussions about illegal mining.

Officers found more than just machinery at the scene. They discovered weapons like pump-action guns and machetes. Other tools associated with illegal mining were also present.

The environmental damage was clear—acres of land were scarred, and water bodies were contaminated.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno emphasized their commitment to ending illegal mining. He stated that protecting Ghana’s natural reserves is a top priority.

The suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution as investigations continue.
