Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has criticized Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo. He accused her of neglecting the dignity of her office. This comes amid efforts to remove her through a constitutional petition.
In an open letter, Amidu stated that Torkornoo has lost decorum since the petitions began. He described her behavior as childlike, involving crying and begging for sympathy from colleagues.
Amidu reacted to what he called a “spurious” affidavit filed by the Chief Justice. This affidavit supported her application for an interim injunction and was leaked to the media.
He emphasized that the Supreme Court established that removal proceedings must be conducted in camera. “That is the Constitution and law of Ghana,” he wrote.
Amidu noted three recent Supreme Court dismissals of injunction applications against public officers. Two of these dismissals occurred on May 21, 2025, which he found suspiciously coordinated.
He pointed out that on the same day, Torkornoo initiated a writ for a public hearing at 3:00 pm. This writ challenged a suspension warrant issued by the President and aimed to stop committee members from proceeding with the petition.
The motion was filed without a supporting affidavit but appeared in the media quickly. Amidu questioned why this happened, stating it was unusual for such documents to be published so fast without proper support.
