Custom officer, 2 others arrested as NACOC seizes 53.6kg of cannabis

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) intercepted 92 slabs of suspected cannabis. The total weight was 53.6 kilograms. This occurred at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

NACOC reported that a British national was smuggling the substance into Ghana. The suspect's name has not been released. They arrived in Accra on Emirates flight EK 787 from Thailand via Dubai.

During a routine inspection, NACOC operatives found two suitcases with the drugs. Further investigations led to the arrest of a customs officer and a worker at the Commercially Important Person (CIP) section. These individuals are believed to be accomplices.

Alexander Twum Barimah, NACOC's Deputy Director, confirmed this information in a media interview. He warned travelers against smuggling illicit drugs into Ghana. He also cautioned security officers who assist such travelers to stop or face legal consequences.

The three suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
