DAAD opens new regional office in Accra to boost West African Academic ties

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) opened a new office in Accra, Ghana, on April 24, 2025. This move aims to boost educational collaborations in Ghana and West Africa. Countries like Nigeria and Cameroon are recognized for their growing academic potential.

The launch event featured notable guests. DAAD President Prof. Joybrato Mukherjee emphasized the importance of this initiative amid global challenges. Other attendees included H.E. Manuel Müller, Acting Ambassador of Germany to Ghana, and H.E. Irchad Razaaly, EU Ambassador to Ghana.

H.E. Manuel Müller expressed optimism about the new office's impact on Germany-Ghana relations. He noted that DAAD has significantly contributed to educational exchange in recent years. The number of scholarships for Ghanaian students has doubled recently.

Müller stated that institutional partnerships between Ghanaian and German universities have tripled. A vibrant alumni network now spans across the region as well. He highlighted DAAD's remarkable contributions to higher education cooperation.

The new regional hub will provide information on study and research opportunities. It will support academic networks and promote science diplomacy in the region. Müller emphasized that this expansion shows Germany’s intent to strengthen ties with West Africa.

The office will also coordinate with the EU’s Erasmus+ program. This collaboration offers students access to various opportunities in Germany and Europe. It reinforces Team Europe's efforts to foster academic exchange between Africa and Europe.

This regional office marks a significant step in Germany’s commitment to international education in West Africa.
