DVLA issues two-week ultimatum for registration of excavators and farm equipment

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued a two-week ultimatum. All owners and operators of excavators and farm equipment must register their machinery by June 1, 2025. Failure to do so may result in arrest and confiscation.

This directive starts on Tuesday, May 14. Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, the DVLA CEO, announced it as part of efforts against illegal mining, known as "galamsey."

Mr. Kotey stated that registering heavy-duty equipment is crucial for regulatory oversight. It helps prevent misuse in illegal mining operations and ensures accountability.

The DVLA is working with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Customs Division, and the Minerals Commission. They have deployed registration teams at all ports of entry. Every excavator or piece of farm equipment must be registered before release.

Owners and operators should take unregistered machinery to the nearest DVLA office for mandatory registration within the deadline. Mr. Kotey warned that non-compliance will lead to enforcement actions, including arrests and seizures.

This initiative is part of the government's strategy to combat environmental degradation. It aims to ensure responsible use of machinery in mining and agriculture sectors.
