Dafeamekpor: Suspended Chief Justice acting as if presumed guilty

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, has made accusations against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He claims she is acting as if she is guilty. This follows her strong criticism of the committee investigating her potential removal.

Justice Torkornoo filed a supplementary affidavit at the Supreme Court. In it, she called the committee's proceedings a “mockery of justice.” She described them as a “ruse” aimed at unfairly removing her from office.

Torkornoo also stated that the process violated her dignity and rights. She labeled her treatment as inhumane and degrading. One of her main concerns was the hearing venue, located in a high-security zone. She argued this location was intimidating and inappropriate compared to past hearings.

In response, Dafeamekpor criticized Torkornoo’s public statements. He urged her to respect the judicial process instead. “She should allow [the law to work],” he said during an interview on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu. He added that she is acting presumptively guilty.

Justice Torkornoo’s legal challenge is still active. Meanwhile, the committee continues its work amid growing political and public scrutiny.
