The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is monitoring a potential cybersecurity incident. This incident involved unauthorized access to the personal information of some MTN customers.
On Friday, April 25, the DPC released a statement. They are working closely with MTN Ghana, the National Communications Authority, and the Cybersecurity Authority. Their goal is to investigate the situation thoroughly.
The DPC stated that MTN Ghana could face consequences under Act 843. If investigations show that any Ghanaian's personal information was compromised, action will be taken. The Commission emphasized it would hold MTN accountable if negligence is found.
The DPC reminded the public that privacy is a fundamental right. All data controllers and processors in Ghana must follow Act 843 strictly.
They urged all institutions to register with the Commission. Registration ensures accountability in handling personal information. The public should check if service providers are licensed to protect their data.
Additionally, the DPC encouraged vigilance and recommended digital safety practices. They advised reporting any suspicious activity to service providers or the Commission. Updates on ongoing investigations will be shared as they develop.
The DPC commits to transparency and protecting individual rights in the digital space.
