Data cost to reduce by end of year — Sam George

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations aims to reduce connectivity costs by the end of 2025.

Minister Samuel Nartey George announced this plan recently. A committee formed in February 2025 created a roadmap for lowering data prices. This committee included telecom companies and the National Communications Authority (NCA). They worked for 13 days without taxpayer payment.

Mr. George instructed the NCA's Director-General to engage with stakeholders. They will discuss immediate, medium-term, and long-term actions to lower prices. He promised citizens that data prices would drop by the end of this year.

The minister spoke at an event for World Telecommunications and Information Society Day in Accra. The theme was “Gender equality in digital transformation.” He noted that his earlier comments about reducing data costs were misinterpreted on social media.

“I have been trending on Twitter,” he said. “People think I can change data prices with a stroke of my pen.” He expressed confidence in the regulator's ability to work with telecom companies. His goal is to ensure customers receive better value for their payments.

Regarding tariffs, Mr. George mentioned engaging the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). They will conduct an independent study on tariffs within eight weeks. This report will align with the NCA's findings for informed policy decisions.

He emphasized that he would not issue directives affecting the industry without consultation. Instead, he plans to collaborate with industry stakeholders to protect investments. His focus remains on ensuring customers receive quality service at affordable prices.

Lastly, Mr. George stated that only the Finance Minister can remove data tariffs.
