The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. He died during a bout on Saturday night, March 29, 2025.
The GBA stated that Oluwasegun received medical clearance before his fight. He faced Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
“Oluwasegun was declared medically fit by the Nigeria Boxing Board Control,” the statement said. His certification as a professional boxer was approved by the GBA for this international contest.
On the day of the bout, Oluwasegun seemed to dominate early on. However, he tragically collapsed in round three at 2 minutes and 46 seconds.
Just seconds before round three ended, he leaned back against the ropes. This happened without any punch from his opponent.
Referee Richard Amevi noticed something was wrong and stopped the fight. He called for medical assistance from ringside physicians and paramedics.
The GBA President, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, informed the Secretary of the Nigerian Boxing Board Control about this incident.
He also reported it to the Korle Bu Police Station. This morning, he helped move Oluwasegun's body to a mortuary for preservation.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, was also informed about this unfortunate event.
Oluwasegun had a record of 24 professional fights: 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws.
